AI Overviews just took your #1 ranking. Now what?

Google's AI answer sits above every result, including yours. What changed, who's winning the citation slots, and how to become the source.

Google's AI Overview now sits above the organic results for a growing share of searches. You can hold the #1 ranking and still lose the click, because the answer is already on the page.

What changed

The Overview summarizes several sources and links a handful of them. Those cited sources get the visibility. Everyone else gets pushed below the fold.

Who's winning the citation slots

  • Pages that answer the question in the first two sentences
  • Content with clear headings, lists, and tables Google can lift cleanly
  • Sites with strong entity signals: consistent business data, schema, and reviews
  • Brands that other authoritative sources mention

How to become the source

  • Rewrite key pages so the direct answer comes first and the detail follows.
  • Add FAQ, HowTo, and LocalBusiness structured data where it's accurate.
  • Cover the follow-up questions the Overview suggests.
  • Monitor which of your queries trigger an Overview, and whether you're cited.

Rankings still matter, since Overviews pull heavily from pages that already rank. But ranking is now the entry ticket, not the prize.
